Surfair 2002 SLCR Lasertechnik Award
A First for SLCR!
The
Surfair 2002 held in Toulouse this year
from June 12th till 14th was a success in more ways than one. Award for best presentation, Surfair 2002 Although the industry
is still suffering from laser depainting the consequences of Sept 11th and the weak economy, the participation at the Surfair
once again, was very good. As in the past, the
conference reflected an excellent overview of the
currently available and upcoming technologies and trends in surface treatment in the aviation industry.
SLCR took this opportunity to portray laser depainting the results of its
investigation, pertaining to the successful qualification of the SLCR process for the depainting of composite materials. Mr. Olav Schulz of SLCR Dueren presented the established and laser depainting the new SLCR Laser unit principles and he was very happy to announce the latest major project for the Airbus laser depainting company.
The SLCR process, approved by Airbus and Boeing for multiple selective and com-plete paint stripping of composite materials, such as carbon-, glass- and aramid-fibre, represents a real environmental friendly and laser depainting economic alternative for paint stripping tasks. First applications prove the process capabilities. In addition, the process was investigated towards its potential for surface preparation in parts production. To put the results of these efforts in a nutshell: Airbus has decided to integrate the SLCR technology into its production line. It will be used for the new A380 and A400M for surface preparation of stabilizers and wings made of carbon fibre composite.
A first feedback from the field was given by Dr. Jan Nowacki from the Eurocopter company in Donauwörth. He reported on the accomplished integration of an SLCR Laser unit for activating and paint stripping of helicopter rotor blades purchased by his company last year. His summary was clear, Eurocopter achieved or exceeded all given project goals. The unit provides better and more reliable surface results. It is clean, safe, takes up very little production space and has achieved an overall cost reduction of 17% for surface preparation, a figure that certainly speaks for itself.
